Tips for making the most of parent teacher meetings

Planning and notes

A couple of weeks before the meetings, you can release the time slots to the parents. Your school may have a policy around how long each meeting should last.

Make sure to build in a couple of breaks in the meetings to give yourself a chance to catch your breath. If you anticipate that a parent may need more time, you could schedule that meeting the week before the bulk of the meetings. You could ask your learning support/special education teacher to sit on in this meeting if appropriate.

First time meeting parents?

If you are an NQT, you could ask your mentor or an experienced teacher to do a mock parent teacher meeting with you. This will give you an idea of what you will need to bring to the meeting and the type of questions you may be asked.

In preparation for the PTMs, you should make some notes about each child and their progress so far.
