Three ways to get your year off to a great start

A Good Classmate

It is important for the children to have a clear understanding of my expectations of them and of their expectations of each other.

This is a very useful activity for exploring what a good classmate is at the start of the school year.

I divide a flipchart into 4 sections and label them as follows:

A good classmate… is… does… says… is not…

Have the children discuss the best words, phrases and ideas.

You may want to keep your completed flipchart on your wall and regularly refer to it when children demonstrate good and desirable behaviours. This will further build positive interactions and relationships in your class.

You can also extend this activity with older children by doing the same thing with “A good teacher is… says.. does… does not.”

Doing this activity will help everyone understand each other’s needs early on and help to avoid negotiation and further explanation later.

You can also download a printable PDF of the blank design to make this an individual activity.

  • Thank you so much for sharing these amazing fun activities to do on day 1. I especially like the idea of spending time telling the children about my own interests. I will definitely be using all of these
