Assessment for Learning: 7 ideas to harness the potential

2. How confident are you?

WHY:
Learners can be led to believe that they are expected to provide ‘the right answer’ when questioned.  This is stressful. Less confident children may not want to volunteer an answer that could be wrong. A child that is confused may not want to ask for help and disengage from the activity instead. With a focus on confidence, students can learn to be comfortable with not being so sure of things.

TRY:
A ‘traffic light’ system can be easily implemented using coloured cards that children can hold up to help you quickly gauge the mood of the class. You use this feedback from the students to lead to more probing questions or to target help to groups and individuals more accurately.
