Synthesising

Why?
Synthesising is the merging of new ideas with prior background knowledge to create a new or original idea. Strategic readers learn to stop periodically while reading to digest what they have just read and what it means. This ‘thinking time’ allows connections to be made and options to form.

How?
Ask the students to stop and identify whenever a story moves on to a new idea or phase. They can reflect and quickly summarise the meaning of a scene, section or key passage. Longer texts may have chapters, which help to identify the major parts of a larger story.
