Drawing inferences
Why?
Inferring is the ability to ‘read between the lines’ and to make a logical conclusion not directly confirmed by the author. It is a critical thinking skill, valuable in many real-world contexts.
How?
Motives of characters are sometimes hidden and only revealed by their actions or choices. Are there clues to be found? Some clues may be easily seen in pictures, charts or graphs and some may be unseen, like the ideas and opinions that might make a character behave a certain way. Why did they say/do that? Do you interpret this situation the same as the character? Would you do that? Would you do something different? What is the author trying to make us think about this character?
