Making connections

Why?
The brain is a learning network. Any connections and links that can be made to other knowledge and experiences, strengthen memories and deepen understanding and comprehension.

How?
It can be useful to think of different types of connection in a guided reading group. You can ask questions that explore:

Text-to-Self connections
The connections between the words and the memories and experiences of the reader. Have you even been in this situation? Is this familiar?

Text-to-World connections
Connections between the text and any facts and information a student may know about the world. Does this remind you of anything? Do you know a place like this? Have you seen one of those? Where?

Text-to-Text connections
These are connections made to content and styles students have encountered elsewhere. Is this plot similar to something else you know or have read? Have you read about this place in the news or in an encyclopaedia?
