Monitoring understanding

Why?
Without guidance, students may only reflect on their skills as readers through their ability to decipher and sound out words. Guided reading should, instead, teach and encourage students to examine their own comprehension and talk about it.

How?
Proficient readers will keep a check on their reading to know whether what they are reading makes sense. While students may be reluctant to say ‘I do not understand’ in a class situation, they should be encouraged to ask themselves ‘is this all making sense to me?’ If it is not, there should be safe spaces where they are comfortable asking for help from the teacher or reaching out to the others in the small group to share their ideas or opinions.
