Problem solving: 8 practical tips to make it work in your classroom

3. “A piece at a time”

Some problems cannot be solved in one step. Finding parts that are easier to tackle can provide an entry into the process for a less confident learner.

Try:  
Encourage the children to create visual cues to help them understand the problem in a different way. Can they draw a picture of the problem or make a diagram of any parts they can see? If the problem involved time, might a picture of a clock help?
