Any great movie needs a great set! Here you can learn a fun way to create very realistic looking sets for a stop motion animation.

Canva is an amazing graphic design software that works online in a browser. You can access it here: canva.com The best part is that it is free! However, schools can also apply for free educators access to the ‘pro’ version which contains many thousands more images and graphics.

In this activity the onscreen rulers in Canva are used to help create a to scale set. Other software like word processors have rulers, so the activity also develops a useful general IT skill.

You can use this video (3:30 mins) in class to demonstrate the key ideas.

For this you will need:

  • Computers or tablets with internet access,
  • A free canva.com account,
  • A printer,
  • Pens, pencils & scissors,
  • A ruler,
  • Cardboard, paper, glue and tape to complete a set.

If you have some medium to large cardboard boxes, they can make ideal sets.

We’d love to see your creations and hear your thoughts about Canva! We are big fans here.
