Ideas for an Autumn Trail

Our own arboretum

Children may have seen labels with numbers and species names on trees and large shrubs in a formal garden or park. There may even be a map with the trees and buildings marked and the trees numbered. Older students could make a map of the school grounds to find adopted trees or for others to learn about the different species.

Older pupils who have adopted a tree can identify tree species by their leaves and seeds. There are several apps and websites and PDFs they can use to help.

They can then make their own labels and laminate them and attach them to the trees so others can find out more about them.

For a technology lesson extension, they can also create QR codes that will take a person with a mobile internet device to a place to find out more. Click here for notes on making and using QR codes.

Hopefully there is an idea you can use here to add to your Autumn and outdoor activities.
