Fairy tales to labels: Ideas for implementing Irish reading with infants

Here’s how I would use a Leabhar Mór in a Gaeilge Léitheoireacht lesson.

Fairy tales can be a great way in to learning lots of foclóir nua in Infants as the stories should be familiar to the children in English.

Start with the front cover.

Cad é teideal an leabhair? Cé a scríobh an leabhar?

Siúil tríd an leabhar. Féach ar na pictiúirí. Cad a fheiceann tú? Feicim… Aimsigh foclóir sa leabhar atá ar eolas ag na páistí. Taispeáin dom an fhuinneog/an doras/an simléar.

Léigh an leabhar. Bain úsáid as greann agus beocht agus tú ag léamh.

Dírigh aird na bpáistí ar ghnásanna an chló. Féach ar na ceannlitreacha agus na lánstadanna. Taispeáin do na páistí go léann muid ó chlé go deas.

I ndiaidh an scéal a léamh, cuir ceist ar na páistí. An maith leat an scéal seo? Cé mhéad muicín a bhí sa scéal? Bain úsáid as geáitsíocht chun tú féin a mhíniú.

After reading, the children could draw their favourite part of the story. They could even label parts of their story. This will build their strengths as emergent readers and writers as Gaeilge.
