Diwali

October 31 @ 10:22 am - November 1 @ 12:46 pm

Diwali, also known as Deepavali, is the Hindu festival of lights, with variations celebrated in other Indian religions. It symbolises the spiritual “victory of light over darkness, good over evil, and knowledge over ignorance”.

Here are five simple ideas to help students understand and celebrate Diwali:

1. Storytelling: The Story of Diwali

Introduce the story of Lord Rama’s return from exile and his victory over Ravana. Use picture books or videos to explain the tale. Students can create storyboards or comic strips to retell the key events.

2. Rangoli Art

Rangoli, colourful patterns drawn on the ground, symbolise good luck. Have students create their own Rangoli using chalk, sand, or coloured rice. This can tie into maths lessons on symmetry and patterns.

3. Diwali Food Tasting

Host a Diwali tasting day with traditional Indian sweets like Laddoos or Barfi. Discuss the importance of food in the celebrations, highlighting themes of sharing and generosity. Always check for allergies.

4. Diyas: The Lamps of Diwali

Diyas, small oil lamps, symbolise light overcoming darkness. Students can make their own Diyas using clay, and you can discuss the importance of light across different cultures.

5. Music and Dance

Play traditional Diwali music or Bollywood tunes and teach simple dance steps. This can be part of a larger celebration day, allowing students to perform for others.
