SUMMARY:World Children's Day
DESCRIPTION:World Children’s Day\, celebrated annually on November 20th\, is a global event dedicated to promoting children’s rights and well-being. Established by the United Nations\, it marks the anniversary of the Declaration of the Rights of the Child (1959) and the Convention on the Rights of the Child (1989). \nFor teachers\, this day provides a wonderful opportunity to engage students in discussions about their rights\, equality\, and the importance of their voices in shaping a better future. Activities could include: \n\nclassroom debates on children’s rights\,\nart projects reflecting children’s hopes for the world\,\nor fundraising efforts to support children’s charities.\n\nBy celebrating this day\, you can foster empathy\, understanding\, and a sense of global citizenship with your class\, encouraging your students to think about how they can contribute to creating a fairer\, more inclusive world for all children.

SUMMARY:World Kindness Day
DESCRIPTION:Write a letter\, send a postcard or just do something nice for someone! \nAs a teacher\, you can inspire kindness by setting up activities like : \n\nA “Kindness Jar\,” where students drop in notes sharing kind deeds they’ve done or witnessed.\nWrite kind messages to classmates or staff. These activities help promote social-emotional learning\, creating a more supportive and connected school environment where kindness is at the heart of everyday interactions.#\nA compliment chain. Have each student write a compliment or kind message to another classmate. Connect the messages in a paper chain and hang it around the classroom. This creates a visible reminder of kindness.  Keep adding links to the chain as more compliments and kind acts are shared throughout the term!\nKindness Bingo! Agree a bingo card with random acts of kindness\, like “help a friend\,” “compliment someone\,” or “include someone new at playtime.” Students try to complete a row of kind acts over a week.\nAssign each student a “secret kindness buddy” for a week. They must do small acts of kindness (like writing a kind note or helping with something) for their buddy without revealing who they are. At the end of the week\, students can guess who their kindness buddy was.\n\nIf you want to try more activities… there is also the Random Acts of Kindness Day!

SUMMARY:Origami Day!
DESCRIPTION:Origami\, the ancient Japanese art of paper folding\, is a fantastic way to teach children patience\, focus\, and fine motor skills. It also promotes spatial awareness and creativity\, making it an ideal hands-on activity for the classroom. For children aged 7 to 11\, origami offers a fun and engaging way to improve their problem-solving abilities while creating something they can be proud of. \nStart with simple models\, like paper boats or animals\, and if you have the time\, gradually introduce more complex designs as students become more confident. Additionally\, origami can be tied into lessons on geometry\, symmetry\, and even cultural studies.

SUMMARY:US Election Day
DESCRIPTION:While the world’s media blast out stories\, you can talk about democracy\, the voting process and how individuals can have a say in how they would like things to be. \nClassroom Vote on a Fun Decision\n\nActivity: Organise a simple vote on something fun\, like what movie to watch\, which game to play\, or what reward to have for good behaviour.\nLesson: Explain the concept of voting\, majority rule\, and how everyone’s opinion matters in a democracy.\n\nCreate a “Mini Election” for Class Representatives\n\nActivity: Hold a mock election where students can run for roles like “class helper” or “eco monitor.” Have candidates give a short speech on why they’re the best choice\, then let students vote.\nLesson: This introduces students to democratic processes like campaigning\, voting\, and fair elections.\n\nVoting as a Right and Responsibility Discussion\n\nActivity: Read a story or show a video about how people gained the right to vote (e.g.\, the suffrage movement). SUMMARY:All Saint's Day
DESCRIPTION:All Saints’ Day\, celebrated on November 1st\, is an important day in the Christian calendar dedicated to honouring all saints\, known and unknown. For a class\, this day offers a meaningful way to discuss themes of faith\, tradition\, and remembrance. You could introduce the significance of All Saints’ Day by explaining how it honours those who lived good and holy lives. \nLesson ideas could include a discussion on what it means to be a “saint” and how students can embody kindness and goodness in their daily lives. \nStorytime could feature tales of famous Irish saints\, like St. Patrick or St. Brigid\, with students creating simple drawings or writing short reflections on what qualities they admire in these figures. \nA class project might involve making a “Saints Wall\,” where students research a saint and share interesting facts or make a saint-themed craft. \nDiscussion points can focus on how All Saints’ Day relates to the broader cultural context\, including how it connects with All Souls’ Day (November 2nd) and ancient Irish traditions like Samhain\, fostering a deeper understanding of both religious and cultural heritage.

SUMMARY:Diwali
DESCRIPTION:Diwali\, also known as Deepavali\, is the Hindu festival of lights\, with variations celebrated in other Indian religions. It symbolises the spiritual “victory of light over darkness\, good over evil\, and knowledge over ignorance”. \nHere are five simple ideas to help students understand and celebrate Diwali: \n1. Storytelling: The Story of Diwali\nIntroduce the story of Lord Rama’s return from exile and his victory over Ravana. Use picture books or videos to explain the tale. Students can create storyboards or comic strips to retell the key events. \n2. Rangoli Art\nRangoli\, colourful patterns drawn on the ground\, symbolise good luck. Have students create their own Rangoli using chalk\, sand\, or coloured rice. This can tie into maths lessons on symmetry and patterns. \n3. Diwali Food Tasting\nHost a Diwali tasting day with traditional Indian sweets like Laddoos or Barfi. Discuss the importance of food in the celebrations\, highlighting themes of sharing and generosity. Always check for allergies. \n4. Diyas: The Lamps of Diwali\nDiyas\, small oil lamps\, symbolise light overcoming darkness. Students can make their own Diyas using clay\, and you can discuss the importance of light across different cultures. \n5. Music and Dance\nPlay traditional Diwali music or Bollywood tunes and teach simple dance steps. This can be part of a larger celebration day\, allowing students to perform for others.
